Indigenous People’s Day: What Does It Mean to be a Good Ally?
Unitarian Universalist Community of the Mountains
October 13, 2024
Jordan Reznick & Shelly Covert
with Frank Lawrence and Rev. Kevin Tarsa
Randy McKean, Worship Associate
Artist and scholar Jordan Reznick interrogates historic photos for what they reveal and conceal about history and cultures. In recent work, he has brought his insightful and skillful eye to Malakoff Diggins, in conversation with members of the Nisenan tribe. On this day before Indigenous People’s Day, an afternoon presentation will highlight that work. In this morning service, Frank Lawrence facilitates a conversation with Jordan and tribal spokesperson, Shelly Covert, about their experiences navigating this cross-cultural endeavor, in the process surfacing insight into the ethics of academic research, allyship, and what it means to be in truly respectful and right relationship with indigenous peoples.
After the service, Jordan gave a presentation called, “Griding Rock vs. Photograph.”
